Description

This world is a group of ruins and monuments, build by an ancient civilizations.[1] These ruins have also a still-running waterway and an artificial waterfall which falls into the sea.

In Wonky Waterway, there are vine switches for the Kongs to pull and reveal items and open passages. in Button Bash, the heroes must ground-pound and use barrel cannons at the right moment to activate buttons which change obstacles and open paths. In Mast Blast, a crab pirate fleet tries to blow the primates using cannonballs and explosive crates. In Damp Dungeon, there are moving waterwheels with platforms through the level for the Kongs to use. The level Itty Bitty Biters seems to keep imprisoned mysterious and agressive creatures, the Toothberries and their variants. And in Temple Topple, the heroes need to ride Rambi the Rhinoceros to destroy obstacles blocking the path.

In the boss level, Ruined Roost, there is a giant egg and a big golden cauldron filled by bombs. The Tiki Tak Tribe leader Gong-Oh takes the giant egg and put it in the cauldron, then the Tiki hypnotizes and possesses it. The egg hatches and gives birth to the giant bird Stu, which attacks the Kongs.

The enemies in the Ruins include Stilts, Tiki Bombers and Tiki Tanks.

The Ruins are on the right side from Monkey Mines which was digged by Kremling Krew to find ore.[2][3][4]

Donkey Kong Country Returns

"The Ruins is the island's third world. These levels take place in the ruins of ancient civilizations that have been hidden away in a jungle. While you face several of the same enemies as you did in the previous worlds, you also face stilts, Toothberries, and Acks. As you travel though these ruins, look for hidden areas and pound on containders to get items. If you see a vine hanging from a statue head, jump up and grab it to pull on it. This will always cause something interesting to happen."

Trivia

  • In the first world of both games, the Jungle, there are also other ruins similar to the ones in the Ruins world. They probably were built by the same civilization who built these.
  • The look of the monuments and architecture seems to suggest that they are Aztec ruins[5]. This theory is also backed by the presence of serpent statues, similar to Quetzalcoatl[6] (a serpent god venerated by the Aztecs). But they can also belong to an ancient animal race, inspired in part by Aztecs, which lived in Donkey Kong Island.
  • In the level Mast Blast, it is possible that the pirate crab fleet reaches the Ruins to searching and robbing some treasures.
  • There are statues sculpted after Toothberries in the level Itty Bitty Biters. It may to suggest that these creatures have been put intentionally in the area, probably by the fallen civilization.

There are special barrels that turn the lights on and off, and risky mine elevators full of slag. Without a hard hat, mine exploration is not recommended, but Klump is not about to give up his!"
