Buzzsaws are robot enemies appearing in the games Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. They are invincible enemies that run across the surfaces of platforms and harm the Kongs upon contact if they standing in the way.

Overview[]

Buzzsaws are only found in the Factory level Foggy Fumes of the Donkey Kong Island. During the first sections of the level, one or two Buzzsaws can be seen running around small platforms at constant speed, towards a single direction and attached to the surfaces. Because these enemies are invulnerable against every attack by the primates, including the ground-pound move, peanuts shot by Diddy Kong's Peanut Popguns and barrels throw at them, direct contact with them must be avoided at all costs. In the mentioned sections, the player must use good reaction speed in order to the heroes step on and advance through these platforms, stay out of the path of Buzzsaws by jumping, and, during some occasions, avoid other enemies also present.

After the second Tutorial Pig's checkpoint of the level, there is a section where the Kongs must move above a large, curved pipe in order to progress. Across the same location, some smaller pipe exits can be seen hanging from the top of screen and pointing downwards. Buzzsaws will keep falling from these exits at regular intervals and run across the large pipe towards the direction of progression. The enemies will keep coming even if the pipe exits are not visible at the current screen. The lack of visibility caused by the fumes, the high flux of incoming Buzzsaws and the elongated low surfaces of the terrain make hard for the primates to avoid harm and collect items on the way. The player must make good use of the floating platforms through the section for safety ground, and the sound made by Buzzsaws helps to indicate when the next enemy is approaching. At the end of this section, instead of staying attached to the surface of the large pipe, all Buzzsaws will just fall into a pit.

Physical Appearance[]

Considering how Buzzsaws are only featured inside a silhouette level, their real appearances are never revealed to the player during both games. The details of these enemies are not visible in a tridimensional shape, but they appear to be metal circular saws. It is also noticeable that they possess a mischievous grin through holes on the side. Buzzsaws have saw-like structures that look like petals from roses, and they are connected in an octagonal shape. While they are moving, one eye appears to be bigger than the other, and their mouths are basically a rectangle with curved edges. Despite their saw blades rotating while they are moving, and they releasing sparks and some smoke upon contact with surfaces, Buzzsaws' facial expressions only change slightly when they are falling down.

Trivia[]

  • Buzzsaws are similar to Tiki Zings, tiki enemies also from the games Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. Both enemy types are shaped as round blades, however, Tiki Zings are capable of flying, and their bodies appear to be solid and made out of wood.
