Cotton-Top Cove, or Cotton Top Cove, is the third world of the Northern Kremisphere in the game Donkey Kong Country 3.[1] But this world and Mekanos can both be accessed after the player clearing the second world, Kremwood Forest, and unlocking the Hover Craft, depending on their choice. This area has notably more water-themed stages than the previous two areas, and both lakes on the map are fully swimmable, however, the waterfalls are not. Squirt is the boss of this world.

Prior to the events of the game, Cotton-Top Cove was a peaceful tourism place to spend the vacations. But the Kremling Kreeps led by KAOS invaded the cove scaring away all the tourists leaving it empty.[2][3]

Stages

Bazza's Blockade

Bazza's Blockade, as the name suggests, features a large amount of Bazzas in an underwater stage. Bazzas are barracuda-like enemies, emerging from small caves underwater and swimming out forward, usually in the Kongs' way. They are quite bothersome, as they appear in various numbers at regular intervals, forcing the player to use good timing in order to avoid Bazzas.

Rocket Barrel Ride

The second stage of Cotton-Top Cove is a waterfall one. Dixie and Kiddy Kong must ride various Booster Barrels in order to progress upwards and reach the top of the stage. By walking on some natural platforms, it is possible to move on a plane behind waterfalls. Parry the Parallel Bird is also present in this stage.

Kreeping Klasps

This is the only boardwalk stage in the current world. Usually, the primates must not swim in order to avoid Nibblas in the water. Most of the progression is made by climbing on horizontal ropes to get across the water safely. However, Klasps, explosive barrel enemies, patrol around the same ropes and they must be avoided by the heroes.

Tracker Barrel Trek

Tracker Barrel Trek is a waterfall stage, and the fourth in the area. It contains Tracker Barrels that can go from left to right at the player's control, and they will track where the Kongs fall and be able to launch them again (hence the stage name). Various Buzzes will be in the way to hinder Dixie and Kiddy's progress. During the second half of the stage, an Animal Barrel can be used to turn them into Ellie the Elephant. The Animal Buddy is capable of collecting water from waterfalls and use it as projectiles for her shooting attacks.

Fish Food Frenzy

During most of the underwater stage, a blue Nibbla will follow the primates constantly. At first, the large fish is friendly, however, in the course of time, it will change colors until displaying the regular orange color scheme of the enemy, harm the main character and return to the blue one afterwards. In order to avoid that, the heroes must move quickly through the location and guide the Nibbla, allowing it to devour Kocos, green and red fish enemies. Lurchins must be avoided because these enemies will advance the process of turning the Nibbla orange.

Squirt's Showdown

Upon entering the boss stage, Dixie and Kiddy will be transformed into Ellie the Elephant. Squirt, the slug boss, is sitting behind a waterfall. He will eventually expose his mouth and use a water jet attack trying to push Ellie off the platforms into the pit below. Usually, the attack can be avoided by the Animal Buddy moving around the arena in clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. Following each water attack, Squirt will briefly expose both eyes. Ellie must collect some water and use her projectile attack to shoot at each eye twice. By the player failing, Squirt will repeat the previous attack pattern until exposing his eyes again, but keeping the current damage received. After each time both eyes are fully harmed, the following boss' attacks will become longer and faster. Squirt is defeated after taking a total of twelve hits in the SNES version of Donkey Kong Country 3 and twenty hits in the GBA version. Additionally, the player receives a single Ski for the first defeat of the boss.

After also clearing the world Mekanos and acquiring the second Ski, the player will be able to unlock the Turbo Ski at the Funky's Rentals. In the SNES version of the game, the ride allows to reach the world K3. However, in the GBA version, the same vehicle gives access to the worlds Pacifica, K3 and Razor Ridge according to the player's choice.

Profiles

"With its bubbling trio of picturesque waterfalls, Cotton-Top Cove might be the best vacation destination in the Northern Kremisphere. Unfortunately, the Kremlings chased all the tourists away. Perhaps this explains why Blue Bear is so bummed out."
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! Player's Guide (SNES version), page 5
"Cotton-Top Cove is a lovely series of tiered lakes connected by roaring waterfalls. This region was a popular tourist destination before all the Kremlings showed up and chased everyone away. With the exception of a bummed-out bear named Blue, the Cove is deserted. Perhaps Blue could help you out if you found something to cheer him up."
Nintendo Power Vol. 89 (SNES version), page 37
"Cotton Top Cove would be an ideal vacation destination-if there weren't so many Kremling kreeps running around. Thoroughly explore all of the areas around the waterfalls. You'll know you've found everything when you see the yellou flag on all the flagpoles and there is an exclamation (!) point after name of each level."
Nintendo Power Vol. 91 (SNES version), page 58
