Crocodile Isle, also known as Kremling Island and Krem Island[2][3][4], is the place Diddy and Dixie Kong adventured through in the games Donkey Kong Country 2 and Donkey Kong Land 2 to save Donkey Kong from the Kremling Krew. It is the homeland island of the Kremlings and where King K. Rool reigned.

Overview

The Crocodile Isle is a high mountainous island with carved crocodile heads up and down. The landscapes of this island contain a huge number of swamps, volcanic caves, brambles that spread all over the island, small town, cavernous glaciers formed by altitude and an ancient temple built by the Kremlings.[5][6]

Under the Kremling Krew's power, a fortress was established where King K. Rool would rule the entire island and an amusement park for his minions to have fun in, showing that he does care for them.[7][8] In contrast to the neighboring island Donkey Kong Island, which is most ecosystemically natural, Crocodile Isle is a gloomy and dark place because of the pollution and waste created by K. Rool's dictatorship.[9] This is demonstrated by dead trees, mining, garbage and toxic waste which became the reason the island is almost barren.

History

This island was explored for the first time by Cranky Kong where he has all the knowledge here.[10][11] This fact also explains by Cranky himself about his knowledge from the Lost World and the role of Kremkoins in the games.[12] Some members of Kong Family as Dixie Kong and Funky Kong mentioned the name of the island only, but never explored before.[13][14]

During the events of the game Donkey Kong Country 2, Diddy and Dixie Kong adventured through Crocodile Isle in their search for the recently kidnapped Donkey Kong. If the player manages to complete the Lost World, Kaptain K. Rool will end up clogging the energy flow in Krocodile Kore, causing Crocodile Isle to sink into the sea.

In the game Donkey Kong Land 2, Crocodile Isle ends up being brought back up to the surface by Kaptain K. Rool, together with all the inhabitants. Due to its sinking, the island is somewhat ravaged. The most notable difference on the island is that Crocodile Cauldron and Krem Quay have fused together to create Krem Cauldron. Additionally, the volcano in Krocodile Kore no longer pumps out energy. At the end of this game, Crocodile Isle once again ends up sinking, this time for good.

Some time later, in the game Donkey Kong 64, the Kremlings would build a Mobile Island Fortress, shaped like King K. Rool's head, to serve as a base of operations during the game and the Kremling Krew's capital base. In the same game, the possible remains of the Crocodile Isle appear in the level Gloomy Galleon becoming a cove along with Kremling galleons (including the Gangplank Galleon).[15][16]

Other Appearances

Animated Series

Though Crocodile Isle never directly appeared in the Donkey Kong Country animated series, several Kremling characters such as King K. Rool and Kaptain Skurvy would sometimes mention the "swamps back home", but never showed where.[17][18]

Comic

In the obscure Donkey Kong comic Bumm-Badabumm Im Urwald, Crocodile Isle never made a direct appearance. However, several locations ventured through in the comic, such as a "Krochead and crashed ship filled swamp", along with the "Lost Land", are obviously based off areas of Crocodile Isle in the games Donkey Kong Country 2 and Donkey Kong Land 2.

Profiles

  • Donkey Kong Country 2:
"As the home port of Kaptain K. Rool's cutthroat pirates. Crocodile Isle is teeming with all types of Kremlings. There's even more variety of terrain on this than there was in Donkey Kong Country. And K. Rool definitely has the home turf advantage here."
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest Instruction Booklet (SNES version), page 20
"The home island of K. Rool holds creatures that bite and sting and crush and claw - rats on the shipwrecks, beed in the hives, porcupines in the woods, pufferfish in the sea."
Nintendo Power Vol. 76 (SNES version), page 26
"King K. Rool now fancies himself a pirate, taking on the title of "Kaptain" and ordering his Kremlings to dress up as peg-legged buccaneers. In the best (worst?) pirate tradition, they've kidnaped Donkey Kong and are holding him for ransom in their lair on Crocodile Isle. Now it's Diddy and Dixie's turn to play hero, swinging, jumping and bopping their way across six massive worlds (each with multiple stages) in search of their hapless comrade!"
Nintendo Power Vol. 79 (SNES version), page 15

List of Main Locations

  • Gangplank Galleon: King K. Rool's galleon is now wrecked, and abandoned on the left coast of Crocodile Isle. However, in Donkey Kong Land 2 and the Game Boy Advance version of Donkey Kong Country 2, the galleon is now located at the right side of the island.
  • Crocodile Cauldron: This area is a volcanic cave. A ship sunken in the lava may indicate that the location was once a regular sea, but a series of volcano eruptions turned the area into a lava-filled world. There are mine shafts filled with gems that the Kremling Krew appears to be mining. This world is present only in Donkey Kong Country 2.
  • Krem Quay: The area is a dark polluted swamp with a very large broken shipwreck. This location is present only in Donkey Kong Country 2.
  • Krem Cauldron: The location is a fusion of Crocodile Cauldron and Krem Quay. This world appears only in Donkey Kong Land 2.
  • Krazy Kremland: This is an amusement park for the Kremlings. Oddly, there are brambles grown inside it. There is also a series of beehives in its entrance, serving as home for the Zinger species.
  • Gloomy Gulch: The area, as the name suggests, is quite gloomy, scary and aged forest. Many ghosts resides in this location.
  • K. Rool's Keep: It is K. Rool's castle, at the very top of Crocodile Isle. There are also mines and ice areas, the latter a likely result of the high altitudes on which the castle is located.
  • The Flying Krock: It is Kaptain K. Rool's giant airship. The vehicle was used to kidnap Donkey Kong from the Donkey Kong Island in the GBA version of Donkey Kong Country 2. In Donkey Kong Land 2 and the GBA version of Donkey Kong Country 2, the airship never becomes visible in the overworld map of Crocodile Isle.
  • Kremling's Lost World: The area itself is located inside Crocodile Isle. The location has also a varied ecosystem, some portions of it being jungle others being volcanic and some frozen caverns. In the center of the Lost World, there is a large volcano called Krocodile Kore, which happens to be shaped like a crocodile's head.

Trivia

  • In the official artwork of Crocodile Isle, the island is horizontally reversed, with the most noticeable differences being Gangplank Galleon and Crocodile Cauldron being located on the right side while Krem Quay is on left side, all of which are opposites of what is presented in the game Donkey Kong Country 2 for SFC/SNES. In the same artwork, the name of the amusement park, Krazy Kremland, is not in reverse however, despite the aforementioned flip. This suggests that the island's artwork was the original and intended position, but was flipped in the game (except for the Krazy Kremland name) due to unknown reasons. Evidence supporting this are the rock faces of K. Rool below his castle on the island's overworld map, all of which have the massive eye-tick on the wrong side in-game while the artwork shows it, correctly, on the face's left side.[citation needed]
  • In the game Donkey Kong Land 2 and the the GBA version of Donkey Kong Country 2, the island's overworld map is reversed in position, making it more faithful to the artwork mentioned above.
