Mugly is the boss of the Jungle world of the Donkey Kong Island, as well as the first boss in the games Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. Like many of the other animals on the island, Mugly falls under the spell of the Tiki Tak Tribe. Krazy Kalimba hypnotizes and takes control over the creature during the boss battle.
Physical Appearance[]
Mugly appears to be an amalgamation of a rhino, a toad and a porcupine. He has three red toenails, with black lines tinting them. He has spots from his legs to his body as well, along with more dark lines on his arm sockets. His underbelly has darker, not as vibrant spots. His mouth has a square texture, along with his teeth. His tongue is pink and large. His jaw has a strip of flesh that is grey in color. His upper lip has small orange dots, and his eyebrows are made of three brown circles. He has black eyes, with oval shaped eyelids. He has many spike along his head and back, starting from a brown color, and ending in a red color. He has a small snout that is just a black dot. He finally has a small tail with white dots on it, like his feet.
Level Mugly's Mound[]
Walkthrough[]
The player must walk towards right and break the DK Barrel if necessary to summon a secondary character (it is impossible to take the barrel into the boss fight). Soon a cutscene will start showing Donkey and Diddy Kong entering the coliseum and witnessing Mugly to eat some bananas. The creature is being stalked by Krazy Kalimba, as if he lured him there. Krazy Kalimba will hypnotize and possess Mugly.
In the first phase of the battle, Mugly will start by ramming at the primates. If the Kongs get caught in the way, they will be chewed and lose a heart. If the heroes hit Mugly's spikes, they will also lose a heart. The only way to defeat him is by jumping on his back while Mugly is attacking. If the boss is stationary, the spikes on his back will pop up, leaving no weak spot. Mugly will make some timed jumps, going from a side to the other of the arena. During this attack, his spikes will be retracted.
After receiving three hits, Mugly will get angrier, and turn his skin to a shade of orange. In this phase, Mugly's attacks will become faster and more aggressive.
After receiving more three hits, Mugly will be enraged and turn red. In this final phase, the boss will try make a large jump and land over the Kongs. When landing, Mugly will create a harmful shockwave across the ground, which must be avoided. The creature will also ram the walls at high speed trying to hit the primates. After hitting a wall, Mugly will pass out for some seconds, allowing the heroes to land a hit on his back. After receiving another three hits, Mugly will collapse (albeit in an overly-dramatic fashion) and be defeated. Krazy Kalimba, who was controlling him, will come up, dazed and confused. Donkey or Diddy can now hit Krazy Kalimba multiple times or let it get away (as beating the Tiki Tak Tribe leaders is entirely optional).
Either way, it will complete the level, and as a result, give the primates access to the Beach world.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS[]
Mugly appears as a trophy in the game Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.
- Trophy descriptions:
- North American version: "Mugly doesn't even peel bananas before eating them! Maybe he gets his yellow skin that way. I'm sure he's a lovable monster when he isn't controlled by evil Tikis. When he charges, his spikes go away—maybe so he can go faster? It definitely exposes his weak spot..."
- European version: "You know how eating carrots all the time can turn you orange? If bananas have a similar effect, that might explain Mugly. His spikes retract whenever he charges, which is either a sign of his better nature when he's not hypnotised by the Tiki Tak Tribe, or just a regular old weak point!"

Trivia[]
- During the multiplayer mode, if the second player controlling Diddy Kong uses his Peanut Popguns to shoot peanuts forward while Mugly is trying to ram the Kongs, the boss will stop and munch the projectiles for a few instants. At the same time, Mugly will also retract his spikes on the back, leaving himself open to bounce attacks by the primates.
- In the background of the very first level, Jungle Hijinxs, in the games Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, there are two stone statues resembling Mugly next to a large, bouncing flower. By the Kongs bouncing on the platform, the statues will throw bananas between their mouths and the player will earn a Puzzle Piece if they are able to collect all the items within a time limit.
- In the game Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, the same two statues can be seen far in the background of the level Homecoming Hijinxs.
- In the same game, Mugly also makes a cameo appearance, frozen solid underwater, in the diorama of the Donkey Kong Island.
- The stone statues and the bouncing flower are featured during the "Donkey Kong Country Returns" microgame in the game WarioWare: Get It Together!.
- In the game Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, the same two statues can be seen far in the background of the level Homecoming Hijinxs.
- Mugly appears to be related to Thugly, the boss of the Cliff world also from the games Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D.
