Scoff is a giant blue hippopotamus and a supportive character in the game Donkey Kong 64. Alongside Troff, he grants the Kongs access to the boss battles in each level, except for Hideout Helm and King Kruiser II. Scoff likes all colors of bananas.

Overview[]

On each of the first seven levels of Donkey Kong 64, there are various locations that a special portal with pictures of Troff and Scoff on it appears. A playable Kong can enter this portal at any moment. Within, they will find a room with a large door and a number on it in the background, with Troff and Scoff on platforms on either side of the door. This area also features a Tag Barrel, and a platform on the other end of the room with pads with each of the five playable Kongs' faces on them. Stepping onto them will show how many bananas they have given.

The objective of this area is to gain access to the level's boss arena on the other side of the door. To open the door, the primates must provide the number of bananas specified on the door by standing on the banana pad in the area. By doing so, it will feed as many bananas as possible within the heroes' possession to Scoff. When the Kong runs out of bananas or the number on the door reaches zero and vanishes, Scoff will belch and slam down on his platform, which will elevate Troff and his platform. If the number reaches zero, Troff will turn the key to the door, at which point the door will flash through the five Kongs' faces before stopping on one. The door will then open, the torches in the room will go out and magic sparkles will appear and circle around. After that, the chosen Kong may enter the door in order to fight against the boss.

If any Kong besides from the one whose face appears on the door approaches it, the door will slam shut. Once the primates defeat the boss and claim the Boss Key, Troff and Scoff's portals will vanish from the level, never to come back.

Requirements for Boss Battles[]

On each of the seven levels, the number of needed bananas will increase, and the Kong to fight the boss battle will change. The colors of the collected bananas between the playable characters are irrelevant to feed Scoff.

Aftermath[]

At the end of the game, after the Kongs defeat King K. Rool, both Troff and Scoff join the heroes' celebration at DK Island during the regular ending cutscene. They are also appear during some bloopers at the special ending cutscene.

Trivia[]

  • Jungle Japes and Angry Aztec are the only levels in the game Donkey Kong 64 where the requirements for bananas to give to Scoff to gain entry to fight with the level bosses are half and double the amount from each other. The other levels starting with Frantic Factory have the requirements for bananas in multiples of fifty.
  • In promotional renders of Scoff and Troff they have nipple rings. However, the nipple rings were removed for an unknown reason. The size of their nipples were also decreased.[citation needed]
  • Despite the Scoff and Troff's portals becoming inaccessible after each boss is defeated inside their respective levels of the current save file in the game Donkey Kong 64, it is possible to replay the same boss battles. In order to do it, the player must collect at least ten Banana Fairies, unlocking the option Bosses in the Mystery menu where they can face the main bosses of the game as many times they want.
