Fugu, The Frightening is the pufferfish boss of the world Sea Breeze Cove, as well as the fourth/third-to-last boss overall in the game Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. He is one of the generals of the Snowmads who is very territorial of his location. Fugu is named after the Japanese word for "pufferfish" of the same name (河豚, Fugu).

Summary[]

Fugu is first encountered when the Kongs dive into Sea Breeze Cove. The Kongs startled him from behind at first, causing him to puff up and quickly turn around, to see a primate or two smiling at him. Fugu quickly reveals his hostile nature and does battle with the Kongs.

Physical Appearance[]

Fugu has a yellow and red colored body, with it being big and spherical. Fugu also has big cheeks on his face, along with large “eyebrows”, and a “beard”. He also has large fangs protruding from his mouth, which grow with him somehow. He has metal cups around his fins, which are probably inhibiting him from swimming fast. He has a large Snowmad insignia on his belly, which is wrapped around his head. He also has dimples on his belly. He has black pupils and white irises, as well as red eyelids. He has long, arching marks on his head, which are colored blue. His weak spot is a green plug-like tail, and his back side is white, in contrast to his body being yellow with a reddish tint.

Boss Battle[]

When the battle starts, in the first phase, Fugu attacks the Kongs by attempting to inhale them, as well as blowing them away. To damage Fugu, the Kongs must hit his vulnerable, non-spiny behind to deal damage and hit. When damaged, Fugu will end up rolling towards the Kongs in anger. Fugu is also notable of sending green pufferfish as an additional projectile for the Kongs to attack. When a green pufferfish is rammed towards Fugu, Fugu will take damage. He sends out three pufferfish in the first phase. He also will inhale bananas, as well as Bubbles and Banana Coins, which the Kongs can obtain.

In the second phase, Fugu will get red on his cheeks, and will do all of the same things as Phase 1, except he will then send out two puffer fish and sea urchins instead of three pufferfish. Pufferfish will also come out of the side of the arena for the Kongs to hit. He also moves a bit faster.

In third phase, not only will he become a redder shade of yellow, but if Fugu gets completely inflated without damage, he will starts rolling on the sides of the arena. This is the deadliest attack during the battle. Fugu is also notable of bumping into the walls, making hermit crabs float to the other side of the arena. He will also be faster while doing this, and when he gets to the size of the arena, he may flop sides in the middle. He will then send out eight sea urchins, then five, then two urchins, as well as pufferfish, and five more before spreading them out and then doing his zigzag again. After he has been hit three more times,, the Kongs will then be automatically put into a sequence where they hit Fugu multiple times before sending him flying.

Trivia[]

  • It is also unknown how Fugu's teeth grow with his body, along with his fins and other body parts.
  • Fugu is special kind of boss, seeing as not only he his the only boss in the game Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze to be fought underwater, but he is also the third boss in the entire Donkey Kong series to be fought only underwater (following the bosses Giant Clam from the game Donkey Kong Land, and Barbos from the games Donkey Kong Country 3 and Donkey Kong Land III, respectively).
  • Fugu shares many similarities with Puftoss, a boss from the game Donkey Kong 64, seeing as both bosses are large golden pufferfishes, both of them serve as the fourth bosses of the respective games, both battles take place above/below water and both enemies can summon smaller versions of themselves to attack the Kongs.
