Ghostly Grove is the first stage of the world Gloomy Gulch of the Crocodile Isle, as well as the twenty-seventh stage overall in the game Donkey Kong Country 2 and the twenty-sixth stage overall in the game Donkey Kong Land 2. It is preceded by King Zing Sting in both games, and followed by Haunted Hall in Donkey Kong Country 2 and Krazy Koaster in Donkey Kong Land 2.

Overview[]

As the first stage of Gloomy Gulch, Diddy and Dixie Kong will find themselves in a forest like area, with large trees that seemingly have faces. Encountered throughout the location are Ghost Ropes that will frequently appear, and then disappear. They are harmless enemies and usually must be used to climb and reach high places or traverse over pits. Other notable enemies also found here are Kloaks, Klomps, Spinies, Klampons, Zingers, Klobbers and Krunchas.

Walkthrough[]

Collectables and Secrets[]

Donkey Kong Country 2[]

  • Red or green Extra Life Balloons: if the player waits long enough, the Kloak at the beginning of the stage will eventually throw two Treasure Chests with Extra Life Balloons inside. The balloons are red in the Super Family Computer/Super Nintendo Entertainment System version of the game, and green in the Game Boy Advance version.
  • Golden Feather: in the GBA version of Donkey Kong Country 2, there will be a Golden Feather that is hidden into the pit after the "N" of the K-O-N-G Letters.
  • Photograph: also in the GBA version of Donkey Kong Country 2, there is a photograph above the exit at the end of the stage, accessible by using the "team-up" move and throwing the secondary character towards it.

K-O-N-G Letters[]

  • K: the first Kong letter will be inside a small alcove with a Klampon and a Spiny patrolling the area. It is advisable to defeat the Klampon first.
  • O: the next letter is near a brown tree and a Ghost Rope. The player needs to jump off the Ghost Rope in order to retrieve it.
  • N: the letter is stuffed within a Treasure Chest, and can be revealed by throwing it at a Klobber or Kaboom nearby.
  • G: near the end of the stage, there is a circle of floating bananas. It contains the invisible letter.

DK Coin[]

The DK Coin is not too far from the "O" of the K-O-N-G Letters, in fact it is right underneath the platform below it. In order to reach the item, the primates must simply roll off into the pit at the right of the letter, moving towards left and below the platform and jump into a Barrel Cannon. The heroes will be blast towards the coin and then back to the top of the upper platform.

Bonus Rooms[]

  1. "Find the Token!": just before the Star Barrel, the player must throw either a Wooden Barrel or a Klobber forward into the Krunchas inside an alcove. This will reveal a secret entrance on the wall at the right side of it. The Bonus Room involves breaking open a Treasure Chest by throwing it at a red Zinger a few times.
  2. "Find the Token!": when the player sees two Ghost Ropes leading to the top of the screen, they will find the second and last Bonus Barrel of the stage. In order to to reach the Kremkoin inside the Bonus Room, the player must quickly traverse a large pit by climbing on and jumping between four Ghost Ropes.

Trivia[]

  • The trees found in the background of this stage (and other forest stages) of both games could be a possible nod to the characters Fighting Trees, anthropomorphic apple trees, from the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz"[1].
  • Interestingly, one of Cranky Kong's tips for Ghostly Grove from the Monkey Museum in the game Donkey Kong Country 2 can apply to both of the Bonus Rooms in the stage, as both are near blue colored enemies (in the first room's case it is the Krunchas, while the second is above two Klampons).
