Krow (ボス ゾッキー, Boss Zocky in Japan[1]) is the boss of the world Gangplank Galleon of the Crocodile Isle, as well as the first boss in the games Donkey Kong Country 2 and Donkey Kong Land 2. He is also the boss of the world Gloomy Gulch, as well as the fourth boss in Donkey Kong Land 2. Krow is a giant Necky whose attack patterns differ from the regular Mini-Neckies. Krow is quite a unique boss in the fact that he is not fought only once in both games. However, only in Donkey Kong Country 2, an undead version is fought later in the game known as Kreepy Krow.

Overview[]

Donkey Kong Country 2[]

Krow can be found at the end of the Gangplank Galleon, residing at the top of a mast of the ship. When the Kongs enter the nest, Krow will screech. In the first phase, he will fly up to his nest, catch and drop an egg, without aiming it towards the Kongs, at the edge of the screen. The egg will bounce four times and then stop. The heroes must avoid the bouncing egg. Diddy and Dixie Kong can stop the egg early by jumping on it. Some time after dropping the egg, Krow will quickly dive towards the ground level. It is possible to avoid the dive attack by crouching on the ground in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System version, and staying in the edges of the arena in the Game Boy Advance version. The Kongs must then pick the egg up quickly and throw it at the boss. If the heroes take too long to pick the egg, it will crack and break into pieces. Krow will keep repeating the same attack pattern. After Krow receiving a second hit, the second phase of the battle will start.

In the final phase, Krow will get desperate and ram himself into the mast holding the nest. The entire stage will shake, the boss will fly around dizzy, and eggs will rain down from the nest over the heroes. The player must avoid the eggs, and wait for a random egg to bounce and land on the ground. While still avoiding the falling eggs, the player must pick up the egg carefully and throw it at the boss. If the Kongs take too long, Krow will eventually dive into the ground level. After receiving the third hit, the bird will repeat the previous attack pattern. The next egg on the ground must be pick up and throw it at the boss for the fourth time. Krow is defeated after receiving a total of four hits.

During the same boss battle, two Banana Coins can be found floating above the nest. The location can reached by using the "team-up" move to throw the secondary character at the top and get both heroes up there, while also avoiding contact with Krow and the eggs thrown by him.

After Krow is defeated once, the Kongs earn a Kremkoin, and then they can access the world Crocodile Cauldron.

Donkey Kong Land 2[]

Krow's Nest stage[]

Krow's attack patterns are similar to the ones in Donkey Kong Country 2. In the Gangplank Galleon boss stage Krow's Nest, during the first phase, the boss will fly above the screen and reappear carrying an egg. Krow will dive into the ground level trying to hit the Kongs while still carrying the egg. The player must quickly jump over the boss. The bird will drop the egg next to the opposite side of the screen, and it will bounce four times until land on the ground. The player can stop the egg early by jumping on it. The primates must pick the egg up and throw it at Krow. The boss will repeat the same pattern. After Krow being hit twice, the second phase will start.

Krow will fly back and forward above the main character while four eggs drop down from the top of the screen over the Kongs. The fourth egg will land on the ground, and the player must pick it up and throw it at the boss, delivering the final hit. Krow will be defeated after receiving a total of four hits.

By defeating Krow here once, the primates receive a Kremkoin, and the world Krem Cauldron becomes accessible on the Crocodile Island.

Kreepy Krow stage[]

In the Gloomy Gulch boss stage Kreepy Krow, during the first phase, Krow will summon four Mini-Neckies to attack the heroes. The player can defeat or avoid the enemies. During the attack of the last Mini-Necky, an egg will land on the ground. The player must pick the egg up and throw it at the boss, before Krow dives into ground level trying to harm the primates. After receiving two hits, Krow will run away and two hooks will appear above the Kongs, allowing them to climb up. The player must climb up some ropes, while avoiding dropping eggs, until they reach a barrel cannon at the top. The barrel will shoot the primates on the next area, starting the second phase of the battle.

Here, Krow will again summon four Mini-Neckies to attack. At the last enemy's attack, an egg will drop from the top, and it will bounce a few times until land on the ground. The player can jump on it to make the egg to land early. The Kongs must pick the egg up and throw it at Krow to harm him, before the boss dives into the ground level. The boss must be harmed twice. After receiving a total of four hits, Krow will be defeated again.

Having defeated Krow in this stage for the first time, the primates are rewarded with a Kremkoin. The world K. Rool's Keep also becomes accessible, as well as the only location of the Klubba's Kiosk in the game, placed on the overworld map of the island.

Trivia[]

  • In the beta version of the game Donkey Kong Country 2 for SNES, the boss battle was set during stormy weather right after the stage Topsail Trouble. In the final version, it is set during windy weather like in the stage Mainbrace Mayhem.[2]
    • Through hacking tools in the SNES version of the game, it is possible to change the backgrounds in the rigging stages by using the code "BA051701".[3]
  • Only the GBA version of the game Donkey Kong Country 2 has a cutscene showing Krow's ghost leaving his dead body, foreshadowing the future battle in the world Gloomy Gulch against Kreepy Krow. This short scene was actually the closest thing in the Donkey Kong Country series to depict the reality of a boss actually "dying".
  • Despite the boss stage of the world Gangplank Galleon being called Krow's Nest, a wordplay on crow's nest[4], a lookout spot on old ships, the game location is not a crow's nest. As seen in the world maps of the game Donkey Kong Land 2 and both versions of the game Donkey Kong Country 2, the galleon possesses three masts. The second mast, located on the central area of the ship, is the tallest among them, being the main mast, and it is also the only one to hold a structure for a lookout to stay on.
