Mugly is what appears to be an amalgamation of a rhino, a toad and a porcupine that acts as a boss in Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. Like many of the other animals on Donkey Kong Island, Mugly is under the control of the Tiki Tak Tribe. Donkey and Diddy Kong encounter Mugly in a colosseum while it is eating its Bananas. They also witness Mugly fall under the spell of the Kalimba.

Mugly's Mound

In battle, Mugly will either charge Donkey and Diddy Kong, or will prance around. If the Kongs get caught in the way, they will be crushed. Mugly can also chew the Kongs if they happen to be next to its mouth. If the Kongs hit Mugly's spikes, they will lose a heart, chewing results in the same outcome. The only way to defeat it is to jump on its back while it's attacking. If it is stationary, the spike on its back will pop up, leaving no weak spot. After multiple jumps, Mugly will get angrier, and turn to a shade closer to red. A few more jumps, and Mugly will turn fully red, enraged. After a few more jumps, Mugly will collapse (albeit in an overly-dramatic fashion). Kalimba, who was controlling him will come up, dazed, confused, and dizzy. Then Donkey and Diddy hit it away, ending the stage, and as a result, completing the world, Jungle. It is unknown what happened to Mugly,he was either recovered from the fight,it's also possible he may have died after the fight since DK and Diddy delivered the final blow on him.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS

Mugly appears as a trophy.

Trophy Information

NA: Mugly doesn't even peel bananas before eating them! Maybe he gets his yellow skin that way. I'm sure he's a lovable monster when he isn't controlled by evil Tikis. When he charges, his spikes go away—maybe so he can go faster? It definitely exposes his weak spot...

PAL: You know how eating carrots all the time can turn you orange? If bananas have a similar effect, that might explain Mugly. His spikes retract whenever he charges, which is either a sign of his better nature when he's not hypnotised by the Tiki Tak Tribe, or just a regular old weak point!
