Rockkrocs are a rare variety of Kremlings found only in the game Donkey Kong Country. They are a group of petrified Kritters which are possessed by an unknown force and causing terror in one of the mines, but they can be controlled by the Stop & Go Barrels.[3][4][5][6]

Description[]

Rockkrocs dwell in one section of Donkey Kong Island: the Monkey Mines; specifically, the stage Stop & Go Station. Rockkrocs were the main enemy in that stage (the only other being Klaptrap which was found in fewer numbers). Rockkroc's main method of attack is to rapidly run back and forth. Rockkrocs are completely invincible in the stage under green light; Donkey and Diddy Kong cannot avoid or attack them at all. Jumping over them merely leaves the two open for the Kroc to turn around and get them. The Kongs must utilize Stop & Go Barrels in order to stop them. By jumping on the Stop & Go Barrels, the area will turn red, indicating "STOP" and so will the Rockkrocs.

Stopping them only lasts for a short amount of time and, in most cases, being too slow results in an injured Kong. When stopped, the Rockkrocs grumble as if weakened and curl into a boulder-like ball to shield themselves (probably due to their hate of red light). Donkey Kong can use his Hand Slap to defeat a curled-up Rockkroc in the GBA version of Donkey Kong Country.

Appearances[]

Literature[]

In the Donkey Kong Country adaption, written by Michael Teitelbaum, Rockkroc is one of King K. Rool's leading Kremings, along with Klump, Krusha, and Kritter. The four of them appear on Gangplank Galleon as K. Rool announces his new plans to wipe out the Kongs for good, and take over Donkey Kong Island. Donkey and Diddy overhear his plan, and Rock Kroc is defeated by Diddy Kong, who merely performs a jump attack on him. This reveals that under normal light, Rock Kroc loses his super strength, and becomes as strong as any normal Kremling.

Donkey Kong Country[]

"This Kremling uses a crafty disguise to make sneak attacks."
Donkey Kong Country Instruction Booklet (SNES version), page 29
"This possessed creature only appears in a couple of stage. That's plenty! When the lights in the cave glow green, the RockKrocs go crazy. They run back and forth with their arms outstretched, looking for something to grab. The only way to shut them down is to make the lights glow red. Doing so entails touching the Stop & Go Barrels as you move through the stage."
Donkey Kong Country Player's Guide (SNES version), page 14
"This evil Kremling's got stalagmites in his bones. He'll morph into a harmless boulder, but when he wakes up, Kong had better hit the switch barrel and hightail it out of the mines."
Nintendo Power Vol. 65 (SNES version), page 20
"Rock Krocs are rare subterranean Krocs that have glowing red eyes and rocklike skin. They appear in only a few corners of Kong Island. Rock Krocs run around in a crazed rampage when the cave is lit green. Activate Stop & Go Barrels in levels that the stony beasts populate to change the level's lighting to red-the Rock Krocs will become temporarily immobilized."

  2. MINES: "The vast mines of Donkey Kong Country have been stripped of any ore they may have once contained. All the tools of the miners remain, however, from mine carts to rickety scaffolding. There are special barrels that turn the lights on and off, and risky mine elevators full of slag. Without a hard hat, mine exploration is not recommended, but Klump is not about to give up his!"

With their red glowing eyes and highly erratic movements, they are probably the most frightful creatures on the island! There's an easy way to calm them down, though. Just hit the Stop & Go Barrels so they read STOP. That tells the RockKrocs what to do. They're pretty stupid. Keep hitting the Stop & Go Barrels because they quickly change back to GO."
