Shuris are underwater starfish enemies first appearing in the game Donkey Kong Country 2. They have made a few other appearances since.

History[]

Donkey Kong Country 2 and Donkey Kong Land 2[]

Shuris are semi-common underwater enemies of the Crocodile Isle in the game Donkey Kong Country 2, and can be defeated only by a stab from Enguarde. There are two versions of Shuris here: orange and pink. The orange versions, being more common, will spin and go in diagonal lines whenever they are at the screen, bouncing off walls. And the pink versions wait for the Kongs to get close, then spin rapidly and swim forward quickly in a straight line, trying to collide against the heroes. The pink type is also capable of going through any obstacles.

Shuris have a similar role as aquatic enemies in the game Donkey Kong Land 2, where they only spin to move around in straight lines, bouncing against solid environments of the game.

Donkey Kong 64[]

In the game Donkey Kong 64, orange Shuris appeared, being rare enemies and only appearing in a few underwater sections. Shuris are quite big and they stay spinning at the same place. When any playable characters get nearby them, the Shuris will stop spinning and slowly pursue the heroes, trying to make damage upon contact. Here, Shuris cannot be defeated, and they must be avoided by the player.

In the same game, there are other starfish enemies called Scubis. They are Shuris with yellow spots over their purple bodies, and they wear diving helmets and hold a blue whip. They swim around the same spot at regular patterns, and they do not pursue the primates. But similar to regular Shuris, Scubis are immune against all attacks and they must be avoided by the player.

DK: King of Swing and DK: Jungle Climber[]

Shuris also appear in the game DK: King of Swing and its sequel DK: Jungle Climber. In both games, Shuris are orange and they attack the same way as in their first appearance in the game Donkey Kong Country 2. Donkey Kong's charged attack is capable of defeating them upon contact.

Trivia[]

  • The name Shuri is probably derived from a throwable ninja weapon called "shuriken"[1]. The same weapon is also known as a "ninja star".
