Skullyrexes (スカルザウルス, Sukaruzaurusu in Japan) are dinosaur skull enemies appearing in the games Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. They are capable of jumping around and biting the Kongs upon contact.

Overview[]

Skullyrexes are mostly found in the Cliff world levels of the Donkey Kong Island, and they also appear in the Cloud level Tar Ball Fall. In most of occasions, the primates will meet the Skullyrexes in groups of two or three jumping around over single platforms. They do not pursue the heroes, and their small jumps are random. However, Skullyrexes can bite and harm the Kongs upon contact. They can be defeated by the primates using single jump attacks, roll attacks or throwing barrels at them. Skullyrexes are immune against the ground-pound move and peanuts shot by Diddy Kong's Peanut Popguns.

Skellirexes, skeleton enemies from the same games, are considered variants of Skullyrexes, despite they having large skulls and full bodies. However, after receiving damage once by the heroes, the Skellirexes' bodies will shatter, leaving only the skulls behind and turning into big-sized Skullyrexes. In this state, they become capable of jumping and biting the Kongs. A second attack by the primates can take down these variants for good. Similar to Skullyrexes, they are no longer susceptible to the ground-pound move and projectiles shot by Diddy's Peanut Popguns. However, as opposed to their smaller counterparts, the random jumps of the Skellirexes' skulls can make them to fall off platforms and into pits.
