Snaggles (ラングィ, Rangwi in Japan) are shark enemies that usually jump out of the water trying to bite at the Kongs. They appear in the games Donkey Kong Country Returns, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

Overview[]

Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D[]

In Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Snaggles are mainly found in the Beach world levels of the Donkey Kong Island, along with Ruins level Damp Dungeon. They first peek out of the water, and then they jump out of it upwards slowly, staying in the air for a few seconds and falling back into water soon afterwards. They repeat this pattern at regular intervals. Snaggles try to harm the primates upon contact by biting them when the heroes jump between platforms above water. In the Beach level Sloppy Sands, some Snaggles are also capable of jumping and breaking plank platforms right above them. The same enemies also appear in the Beach level Peaceful Pier, where they jump out of the water and can destroy the Kongs' Rocket Barrel on the spot during the regular modes of both games, or if the player has not equipped any assist items in the New Mode of the Nintendo 3DS game version. Snaggles are immune against all physical attacks by Donkey and Diddy Kong, including the ground-pound move and peanuts shot by Diddy's Peanut Popguns. Considering how water is a hazard in both games and the only way to defeat Snaggles is by the primates throwing single barrels at them, it is advisible to avoid these enemies. Usually, the player must observe the patterns of Snaggles and use good timing in order to jump over the enemies and progress safely. In fact, inside some levels, If the player is skillful enough, it is also possible for the heroes to execute roll-jumps and move past right under the Snaggles when they reach the apex of their jumps.

Variants[]

There are some variants of Snaggles in both games. Yellow Snaggles usually appear alongside regular ones in the same levels. These variants' patterns are similar to their common counterparts by jumping out of the water upwards slowly, however, their second jumps are always faster, and they are able to reach higher. Yellow Snaggles are also only defeated by the Kongs throwing single barrels at them.

At the end of the Ruins level Damp Dungeon, only a single Giga Snaggles (ギガラングィ, Giga Rangwi in Japan) can be found just before the Slot Machine Barrel. Despite the larger size, its behavior is not different from regular Snaggles by jumping out of the water slowly and falling back afterwards. Because of the Giga Snaggles' resistance against all physical attacks by the primates and the lack of barrels nearby it, it is unknown if it is even possible to harm this unique enemy, forcing the player to avoid it at all costs in order to progress and reach the Slot Machine Barrel.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze[]

Blue Snaggles later return in the game Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. They behave in similar way to the previous games. However, with the heroes' new ability to swim, if the Kongs dive in nearby Snaggles, the shark enemies will cease of jumping, pursue the primates and try to bite them. It is impossible to harm Snaggles when the heroes are underwater. These enemies still can be defeated by the primates throwing single barrels, watermelon bombs or Tuff Tucks at them. Cranky Kong's cane bounce attack can also defeat Snaggles, when the enemies jump out of the water.

Yellow Snaggles also reappear in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Despite losing the ability of jumping out of water, they will pursue the heroes around their patrol area and bite them. When underwater, they must be avoided by all means. Yellow Snaggles can only be defeated by single barrels, watermelon bombs or Tuff Tucks thrown at them from outside of water.

Physical Appearance[]

Regular Snaggles resemble great white sharks[1] sporting white underbellies with a dark blue/grey color scheme in Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, and a blue one in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. However, they have large heads and round bodies. Snaggles possess two rows of sharp teeth, with the upper row being visible even when their mouths are closed. They also appear to display a malicious grin.

Trivia[]

  • Despite their color schemes and more cartoon-like appearances, Snaggles and Yellow Snaggles are often confused with Chomps, also shark enemies from the game Donkey Kong Country.
