Snaps, also known as Snippies, are orange/yellow crab enemies found in the games Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. They pursue and pinch the Kongs upon contact.

Overview[]

Snaps make their first appearance in the first level of the Beach world of the Donkey Kong Island, Poppin' Planks, and reappear in most of the Beach levels. Additionally, they return in the Ruins level Mast Blast and the Cliff level Tippy Shippy. These enemies also appear in the Cloud level Gushin' Geysers, present only in the Nintendo 3DS game version. Snaps are known to come out of the sand attempting to hurt the primates by pinching them at close distance. These crab-like enemies actively walk towards the heroes' direction, willing to drop down from high platforms, and sometimes, inside pits. If the primates try to avoid the Snaps by going past over them, the crabs will quickly change directions and move towards the Kongs. Snaps can be defeated easily by the Kongs using a simple jumps on them, roll attacks or having a barrel thrown at them. They are also some of few enemies in both games susceptible to be taken down by Diddy Kong's Peanut Popguns shooting single peanuts at them. Snaps can also be flipped over and temporarily stunned by the ground-pound move when it is used nearby them.

In both games, there are also stronger variants of Snaps called Pinchlies, red crab enemies which use the position of their claws as a defense against specific physical attacks by the primates.

Trivia[]

  • The Snaps act similar to Huckit Crabs, enemies from the game New Super Mario Bros. Wii for Nintendo Wii. However, Snaps do not throw rocks like Huckit Crabs.
  • In the background of the game file screens of the games Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, multiple Snaps can be seen moving around a shipwreck and Donkey and Diddy Kong's stone statues.
  • In the game Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Snaps are not featured as enemies. However, similar to the two previous games (as mentioned above), a single Snaps (or multiple ones) appears in the game as a cameo by walking around the backgrounds at the main title and controls selection screens.
